Three awaiting-trial suspects arrested for robbery and due to appear in court have increased their charges by allegedly robbing a fellow suspect of his jewellery.

The theft happened while the suspects were in the holding cells below the court.

Police said on Tuesday that the suspects were waiting to be called before a magistrate when they robbed another suspect.

"Their victim was a fellow suspect," spokesman Shooz Magudulela said. "He had all his jewellery removed. He told police on duty that he was overpowered by the three men."

The suspect told police that his family had brought him the rings and necklaces just in case he was jailed for a long time.

Thokozane Zwane, 24, Siyabonga Buthelezi, 22 and Mncedisi Zulu, 24, were later charged with another count of robbery. They will remain in police custody until a further bail appearance.
