A German multinational company has launched a ground-breaking international environmental education initiative for South African youths.

The Bayer Youth Environment Envoy (Byee) project, aimed at developing young environmental leaders and boosting the levels of awareness among the youth, was launched this week.

"We are excited about the launch of Byee in South Africa and hope our youths will take advantage of the programme," said Bayer chief executive Richard van der Merwe.

The project is aimed at youths between the ages of 18 and 24. The participants will be required to write an essay on their project.

A shortlist will be made based on their project content, leadership, environmental know-how and involvement.

The judge will be looking at the five focus areas of sustainable agriculture: water conservation, litter and waste management, energy efficiency and climate change.

The programme was started by Bayer in 1998 in Asia, originally introduced in Thailand.

Byee has participants from 18 countries on four continents. Two participants will represent SA in Germany in November.
