Sunshine Tour senior tournament director Theo Manyama was delighted yesterday after South African golfer John Mashego finished in the top 10 at the Russian Seniors Open at the weekend.

"Before he left for Russia he was playing great golf and in every practice match he registered under-par [scores] and I knew that he would make it abroad," said Manyama.

"We are proud of his achievements and I had confidence in him when he left. He shot good scores and I am not amazed with his achievement."

The White River player registered 71, 70 and 74 for a one-under-par 215 at the Pestovo Golf and Yacht country club in Moscow. He finished with birdies at the 15th and 17th but suffered a final blow at the closing hole that saw him miss the opportunity to finish alone in seventh.

Mashego finished eighth alongside Americans Bob Boyd and Jerry Bruner; Italy's Guiseppe Cale; Juan Quiros of Spain; and Britons Carl Mason, Sam Torrance and Denis O'Sullivan.

lThe Southern Districts Golf Association and Youth Development will hold a golf day at the Orkney Country Club on Sunday in preparation for the Golf Club Challenge in Sterkfontein in September.

The event tees off at 10am and is open to all golfers. The green fee is R110 a player.
