Mountain-bike riding is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing sports in South Africa.

Dirt tracks, steep climbs and narrow routes are just some of the ingredients that draw more and more adventure racing junkies, both young and old, to the sport.

They are all present at this year's Medscheme Walkerville Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday at the Lapeng Hotel and Conference Centre starting at 9am.

Entry fees are R110 for the 60km and R70 for the 35km race.

Known as one of the Highveld's toughest, coldest races, the weather does not stop mountain bike enthusiasts from testing themselves against the 35km and 60km routes that promise to be tough yet exciting.

"Medscheme is committed to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle amongst its staff, stakeholders, clients and their families, and being involved in events like the Walkerville Mountain Bike Challenge is just one of the ways in which we encourage this," said Andre Meyer, chief executive of Medscheme.

"Mountain-biking is an all-inclusive sport. Men and women, young and old, die-hard adventure cyclists and families looking for a relaxing day out are all drawn to the sport which makes fresh air and fun a guarantee."
