Modern Day, who battled during his first few seasons at stud, has emerged in recent years as a prolific producer of tough, well-performing handicappers. If there is one man who knows what a good offspring of Modern Day should look like it is Egdes, who trained him as a very impressive racehorse in the mid 1990s.
Clear As Day Light is from the Secret Prospector mare Clear Creek, from the stout family of Weston Paint, Winona and Hawaiian Wahoo.
Trainer Glen Kotzen had his eye on Kahal colt Ozzie Dude (Lot 179) all day and although he had to wait for the second last lot, was excited to secure this first foal of Countess Of Oz for R220000.
Jonathan Snaith was similarly chuffed with Snaith Racing Stables' R170000 buy, Petrina (Lot 34), a filly by Silvano from the immediate family of Imperious Sue and City State he described as a "very correct" specimen.
The pendulum swung towards buyers with many lots sold in this sale's middle market of between R30000 and R80000. The first-day aggregate of R9,14 million was 17 percent down on last year, but auctioneer Mike Killassy commented: "I was surprised by the turnout of people."
