"The reporting of accidents in small operations is very low. So the figures are not truly reflective of injuries and fatalities in the industry," said Thabo Gazi, chief inspector of mines in the Department of Minerals and Energy.
Gazi was addressing a health and safety indaba hosted by the National Union of Mineworkers in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, last week.
Gazi said 88 deaths had been reported this year. Of 3800 injuries reported last year, there was no record of the number of miners who had been disabled.
