Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa has been appointed honorary colonel of 6 Medical Battalion Group at a ceremony held at the Pretoria City Hall on Friday.

The objective of the battalion is to provide a comprehensive military health service by combat-ready reserve force members in a military as well as a civilian capacity.

Under the command of Colonel Nhlewane Maminze, 6 Medical Battalion Group is one of the reserve force battalions of the South African Military Health Service.

Ramokgopa is expected to help in the maintenance of goodwill and liaison between the services established by the South African National Defence Force.

A medical doctor by qualification, Ramokgopa was Gauteng health MEC prior to her appointment as mayor. She also chaired the Gauteng portfolio committee on health between 1998 and 1999.
