Absa Premiership newcomers Maritzburg United have put nine players on transfer in their quest to sign new faces in the 2008-2009 season.

Farouk Kadodia's team has released David Mkhandawire, Godfrey Mokoena, Thando Ngwabeni, Michael Mogaladi, Morris Chauke, Enva Wiltner, Godfrey Doboro, Sibusiso Mokoena and Tshweu Mokhoere.

Coach Ian Palmer's future hangs in the balance as Maritzburg are rumoured to be trying to lure former Platinum Stars and Orlando Pirates mentor Owen da Gama to the club.

Maritzburg general manager Quintone Jattoo confirmed the player clearout but said he was unaware of what was happening with Palmer.

"Yes, we have sacked a number of players because we want to sign valuable ones before the start of the season. Those players were not part of our plans for new season. We want to make sure that we avoid relegation this upcoming season.

"I don't know about Da Gama joining us," said Jattoo. - Sapa
