Durban is bracing itself for the mother of all strikes when thousands of people will take part in a march against increasing food prices.
Organised by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the march will start at 11am tomorrow from Curries Fountain to the City Hall.
The strike will be led by Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi. The protesters will hand over a memorandum to the finance and economic development department and Durban Chamber of Commerce.
"We are going to bring the city to a standstill," KwaZulu-Natal Transport Alliance chairman Eugene Hadebe said.
Hadebe said taxi drivers and owners would come out in their numbers to show their anger over escalating food prices.
"We will take part in the stayaway, which means there will be no taxis," Hadebe said.
"The price of food and petrol has gone up to such an extent that our members are unable to survive."
The South African Democratic Teachers Union has appealed to its members who are on holiday to show solidarity with the marchers.
