The DA is surprised at the ANC's choice of new Ekurhuleni's executive mayor.

Yesterday it said it remains to be seen if Ntombi Mekgwe can fill Duma Nkosi's shoes.

DA caucus leader in Ekurhuleni, Eddie Taylor, congratulated Mekgwe, but said: "It was somewhat of a surprise that the ANC had chosen speaker Ntombe Mekgwe as replacement.

"We did not think that there was anyone in the ANC caucus of Nkosi's calibre who could move into the mayor's position."

Nkosi leaves as mayor at the end of this month.

"But of the available talent councillor Mekgwe is a reasonable choice," said Taylor.

He said it was hoped that Mekgwe would do what was best for the residents of Ekurhuleni rather than what was best for her party.

"She has not always been able to act impartially as speaker and she will have to realise that as mayor she holds that position on behalf of all the people of the region." - Sapa
