KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a massive search for five unknown gunmen who got away with an undisclosed amount of cash after blowing up a Standard Bank ATM in Kwasizabantu mission in Kranskop.

Police confirmed yesterday that commercial explosives were used and damage to the building was extensive and estimated at R1million

On Friday five men, armed with AK-47 rifles, held up three security guards on duty and stole two 9mm Norinco service pistols from the guards.

Police said the robbery was well planned. One of the men stood at the gate while two others went to the ATM.

The guards were taken at gunpoint to another part of the building, where two other men told them to lie down on the ground.

A 25-year-old American man, who was returning from church on the premises, was also held up by the suspects and forced to lie down with the security guards.

A short while later an explosion was heard. The suspects got into their vehicle and drove off with a large but undisclosed amount of cash.

There were no injuries.

Police spokesman Joey Jeevan yesterday urged anyone with information to contact Captain Bobby Naicker of the Greytown serious and violent crime unit on 082-469-9189.

"Any informant who wants to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stop on the toll free number 0800 10111," she said.

The province has been hit by a series of ATM bombings since the beginning of last year. ATMs at petrol stations have been targeted and a number of security guards have been killed.
