Women are ready to lead and very ready for a female president, newly elected ANC Women's League president Angie Motshekga said yesterday.

Motshekga was briefing the media at the end of the ANCWL national conference in Bloemfontein yesterday after she beat general secretary Bathabile Dlamini to the top post.

"I don't know if South Africa is ready, but women are very ready for a female president," she said. "There are a number of capable women who could be president."

Asked if she would stand for the country's presidency if nominated, she said her focus now was on her new position and her job as Gauteng's MEC for education.

"I'm very happy with my job as the MEC for education and there is no other position in my mind at the moment."

Motshekga said the ANCWL would work on how best to support ANC president Jacob Zuma in his coming corruption trial.

"We are ANC members first and we will support Zuma in line with the Polokwane resolution."
