SA university team eager to defend their title

University Sport South Africa (Ussa's) team left for Kampala, Uganda, at the weekend confident that their athletes will defend the Federation of African University Sports title.

The tournament gets under way today and ends on July 16.

The team comprises 58 women and 59 men who will compete against students from around the continent.

South Africa scooped 53 gold medals, 45 silver and 30 bronze when they hosted the biennial event in Pretoria in 2006.

The team includes:

Track and field (men) - Bernadus Crous (javelin), Dean Brummer (shot put, discus), Donovan Snyman (high jump), Elisa Langenhoven (high jump), Johann Hannekom (400m hurdles), Kagisho Kumbane (100m and 200m), Keenan Watson (long jump), Lungisa Mdedelwa (10000m), Michael Tlhoro (3 000m steeplechase), Philippus, Janse van Renseburg (javelin), Sidwell Mithi (400m), Warren Hendricks (800m), Wiekus Jonck (400m hurdles)
