Ofentse Mogawane, South Africa's fastest 400m runner of the year, recorded another good win at the 7th Citti di Lugano International athletics meeting in Switzerland at the weekend, clocking 45,89 sec.

It was his second sub-46 sec race in seven days but unfortunately he lacked top-class competition and did not manage to better the Olympic qualifying time of 45,55 sec. Fellow Pretoria runner Pieter Smith was second in 46,60 sec and Fernando Augustine of Mauritius close behind in 46,79 sec.

Leigh Julius, the diminutive sprinter from Port Elizabeth, finished fourth in the 100m with a time of 10,44 sec behind the Italian winner, Fabio Cerutti (10,25) after earlier winning his heat in 10,45.

SA record holder in the 800m, Hezekiel Sepeng, who is gradually improving his times after a layoff of more than two years, was also fourth in 1min:48,86sec. Yaw Fosu-Amoah, a fifth South African at the meeting, was third in the long jump with 7,77m.

It was a close contest and he finished only 3cm behind the winner, Gasper Araujo of Portugal. - Sapa
