Shosholoza, an exciting musical that depicts the lives of mineworkers, opens at the Playhouse Opera Theatre in Durban for a brief season this week.
After a successful season in Pietermaritzburg, the musical is on in Durban from Wednesday until Saturday.
The innovative theatrical musical is set to take the audience on a spellbinding journey about life on the mines.
Written by John Malusi Ledwaba, Shosholoza features a 32-strong cast. Ledwaba's script incorporates all the elements of traditional storytelling and humour.
The play looks at the highs and lows of the life of a newly recruited mineworker, Jabulani Makhathini, from a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal.
He is so taken in by the good times and the hardships of mining life that he neglects his responsibilities as a married man.
He becomes a heavyweight stick-fighting champion which makes him popular with females. The play examines the loss of life because of HIV-Aids, non-safety compliant mine bosses, and the introduction of women mineworkers in 2001.
The play embraces the rich traditional kaleidoscope of indigenous languages and cultures. It features experienced actors such as Mthandeni Mvelase of Sarafina fame.
The pulsating dances are inspired by classic mine moves and modern footwork.
