The theft of money confiscated from criminals at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is becoming the norm, and the police are usually the prime suspects.

Another robbery, involving millions of rands, took place last week, just three weeks before the trial of 15 people who allegedly stole about R65million from an aeroplane parked at the airport resumes in the Johannesburg high court.

Police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao said six men posing as police officers robbed two police officers last Tuesday.

"The officers were pulled over by six men in three vehicles with blue lights and sirens. They were armed with R5 rifles and dressed in civilian clothes. They disarmed them and took their office keys."

The policemen were held hostage while the robbers headed for the airport where they stole cash and drugs confiscated from smugglers. The stolen items were kept in the police holding facility.

A Sunday newspaper has claimed the robbery is believed to be an inside job, meaning police could be the prime suspects. - Dudu Busani
