NO COMFORT FOR CALLOUS KILLING OF 2 GIRLFRIENDS

Comfort Matjake showed no emotion when a Mmabatho high court judge this week gave him a double life sentence for murdering his two former girlfriends.

Judge AJ Swaartz found Matjake, 28, guilty of smashing in their heads with a metal rod on August 8 2005.

The court heard on Wednesday that Matjake was furious when he learnt that the women - also his co-workers - Felicity Doyi, 23, and Kelebogile Motsatsi, 27, were about to leave him.

On the day of the murder Doyi served Matjake, a mechanic, with a protection order. He then hit her several times with an iron bar across the head before walking to another section of the factory where he beat Motsatsi over the head with the same iron rod. Both women died instantly.

In court Matjake pleaded for mercy.

"I still have a lot to do with my life," he said.

Application for leave to appeal was denied.

Swaartz said: "There is no other court that would rule otherwise.

"Matjake showed no remorse after killing his girlfriends. He did not dispute the testimony of state witness Leon van Niekerk that Matjake smiled after the murders.

"He even has the audacity to say his child with Doyi will be looked after by his grandparents."
