Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa is alive.

South Africans first heard Mwanawasa had died when President Thabo Mbeki asked a remembrance ceremony yesterday for the victims of xenophobic attacks to observe a minute's silence for the Zambia president.

Earlier Talk 702 spread the news when it quoted a Zambian high commission spokesman as saying the president was dead.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said Mbeki had been formally informed by an official of the Southern African Development Community.

"President Mbeki regrets the misunderstanding and wishes President Mwanawasa a speedy recovery," said Momoepa.
