Police are investigating why foetuses are being discovered at a dumping site in Krugersdorp on the West Rand.

This week a scrap collector at the Luipaardsvlei landfill site found three foetuses centimetres away from each other.

This is hardly a month after two other foetuses were found in the area.

West Rand police spokesman Captain Jacob Raboroko said: "We have taken the latest foetuses to the Roodepoort mortuary to determine whether they had developed into human beings."

Raboroko said the police were investigating whether the foetuses were dumped by pregnant mothers or by people running illegal abortion centres.

"We cannot speculate how the foetuses ended up at the dumping site, but we are investigating all possibilities."

When Sowetan visited the site yesterday, we were refused entry to the premises because we did not have permission from Mogale City Council. We were also informed that all scrap collectors had tags that they used to enter the site.

The dumping site is next to Mnqandatshe Hostel.
