A quick response by police in Modimolle has resulted in the arrest of three suspected members of a housebreaking syndicate in the area.

The three had allegedly just broken into a house and robbed a 60-year-old man of his car and household goods on Wednesday morning in the residential area of Modimolle.

Police spokesman Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba said the men found the victim asleep in his house and beat him up.

"They stabbed him in the leg and demanded the keys to the safe," he said.

The men allegedly also attacked the gardener who was sleeping in a room outside.

"The suspects loaded household items, including a generator, computer, cellphones and other items into the victim's Ford Focus sedan before fleeing," said Ledwaba.

"We were alerted and immediately launched a search for the stolen vehicle. We spotted it driving towards Bela-Bela.

"The car rammed into a tree at the entrance of BelaBela township.

"The suspects fled on foot," he said.

Ledwaba said the men were arrested along the R101 road hitchhiking to BelaBela.

Two firearms, of which one had its serial number filed off, as well as most of the stolen items, were recovered in and near the stolen vehicle.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 35, are expected to appear in the Modimolle magistrate's court today.
