Collision claims woman while two people burn to death in KZN suburb

A woman was killed and eight other people were injured in a head-on collision on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, the provincial transport department said yesterday.

A woman was killed and eight other people were injured in a head-on collision on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, the provincial transport department said yesterday.

Spokesman Zinhle Mngomezulu said the incident took place on the N2 southbound freeway near Port Shepstone on Wednesday night.

"The driver of a Ford Sapphire alleges he was trying to avoid a stationary truck," Mngomezulu said. "He swerved too much to the right and collided with an oncoming minibus taxi."

One passenger in the minibus died at the scene.

"Two other passengers in the taxi were critically injured and another six sustained minor injuries," Mngomezulu said.

No occupant of the Ford was injured. Port Shepstone police were investigating a count of culpable homicide against the driver of the Ford.

In a separate incident two people burnt to death in a house fire in Durban's Hillcrest suburb yesterday morning, police said.

Hillcrest police spokesman Constable Lungi Jama told Sapa it was believed the victims were a man and woman.

Pinetown's eThekwini fire department divisional commander Zibuse Ngcece said the house had been completely destroyed and the bodies recovered.

"At this stage the cause of the fire is not known, but we suspect arson," Ngcece said. - Sapa
