Soul and R&B followers should prepare themselves for a "quiet storm" when diva Anita Baker arrives in South Africa next month.

Baker, pictured, an accomplished international singer, will give a single performance at the Nasrec Expo Hall, Johannesburg, on August 24.

Baker, winner of eight Grammys, is one of the world's most talented female musicians. She was born in 1958 in Toledo, Detroit. Baker, whose music has touched millions in a big way, started singing in a Baptist Church choir at the age of 12.

Her self-titled album came out in the fall of 1979. Since then she has never looked back. With her classy, refined brand of romantic soul, Baker established herself as one of the "quiet storm" singers of the early 1980s.

Gifted with a strong, supple alto, Baker was influenced not only by R&B, but by jazz, gospel and traditional pop. This gave her music a distinctly adult sophistication. Smooth and mellow, but hardly lifeless, it made her one of the most popular romantic singers of our time.
