Mpumalanga police are searching for two men who shot a farmer dead in front of his wife, two young children and an employee on Wednesday afternoon.

Tienie Nel, 42, of the Brakfontein farm in Leslie, was shot several times by two men who stopped him while he was driving his bakkie, pretending to ask for directions.

His wife, children and employee fled the scene.

The robbers took the bakkie and left Nel bleeding on the side of the road.

His foreman found him and took him to hospital but he died before arrival.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said police later established that the thugs had earlier broken into Nel's farmhouse and stolen firearms and a number of appliances.

"They had loaded the stolen goods onto a stolen tractor's trailer but the tractor broke down, forcing them to find alternative transport," he said.

"The men escaped in the vehicle whose registration is CJK 288 MP," Khoabane said.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead by an intruder who broke into his house in Bushbuckridge on Wednesday morning. Nothing was stolen.

The man's identity is being withheld until his next of kin have been located. No arrest has been made and police investigations are continuing.

In KaBokweni, near White River, a 34-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of his wife, who died after she was assaulted.

The woman was also not identified because the police were still trying to find her next of kin.
