Trainer Dean Kannemeyer, who has won Africa's greatest race twice for Fieldspring Racing in the past six years with Dynasty and Eye of the Tiger, was upbeat about the chestnut's chances after his "excellent" work at Clairwood early on Monday morning.

"I have got him right. He has peaked at the right time and although I will need a bit of luck from the 12 draw, I believe we can stretch them in the finish."

Kannemeyer said the colt was a late maturer and had never been a good track horse. He had suffered a minor upset in his preparation for the big race but Kannemeyer had been very pleased with his gallop at Greyville last Thursday and he had worked very well since then.

"His work this morning was excellent and I have got him where I want him to be. He has the two races under his belt, at Clairwood and in the Daily News 2000, and he has come right at the right time."

Kannemeyer said Russian Sage was a very good horse and had it not been for his wide draw, he would have seen the Jallad colt as the horse to beat. Tan Can had run a neck second to Russian Sage in the Bloodstock SA Cape Derby and on that occasion Tan Can had been catching Russian Sage with every stride. He had run on behind Russian Sage in the Daily News 2000 after being squeezed and having to shift.

"We have the better draw on Saturday and a slight weight advantage and the extra 200m of this race will be right up his street," Kannemeyer said.

"This is an open race and I am going to need some luck from the 12 draw. I would have preferred a draw around six but I think we have a good chance and will be right there at the finish."
