After winning his first national duathlon tournament, Roy Mosikare is hoping to do well at the World Championships in Italy next month.
Mosikare, 24, made his breakthrough by winning a gold medal at the South African Championships in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
In his event, the lanky Mosikare ran a 10km road race where he finished sixth, won the 40km cycle race and 5km fun run.
The former road runner competed in the under-24 category, where he finished third in Cape Town two years ago.
While his win at the championships may have come as a surprise to some, Mosikare has been monopolising the sport in Gauteng.
"It is a dream come true for me, I have been training hard so that I could win a major tournament to make a name for myself in duathlon," he said yesterday.
"It was great to see the MEC of sports and recreation in Free State [Ace Magashule] at the finish line where he congratulated us.
"Personally, I would like to thank my team manager John Roberston who has been encouraging me not to despair in the past six years.
"He keeps telling me that I have the potential, I have to keep on working hard and my time to win a big event will come."
Mosikare, who is from Zenzele near Mohlakeng, is registered with the Konica Minolta Team where he is one of their most respected members.
"The club is based in Midrand but we are given training programmes to follow during the week.
"We meet over weekends when we have to compete.
"I do my training on the West Rand. The plan is to continue with my rigorous training programme so that I can do well at the World Championships.
"There are many black youngsters who are doing duathlon. My success in the sport will encourage more brothers and sisters to develop interest in duathlon."
