Durban's winter holiday season is, as usual, attracting thousands of local and international visitors, according to Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN), and the economic effect could sing to the tune of R2,4 billion.
"The six weeks over June and July are KwaZulu-Natal's second most important tourism period, largely because of the warm weather that makes it possible to enjoy the beach and major events," TKZN marketing general manager, Nqobile Majozi told Sowetan.
The Durban Beach Festival, said to be the biggest beach event of its kind in the world, is already under way at the Durban beachfront.
And this weekend's ever popular Vodacom Durban July, Africa's premier horse race, is set to draw about 55000 spectators, 10 percent of whom are from Johannesburg.
Other events in the region include the Sardine Festival, the South Coast Cultural Celebration as well as skiboat festivals and a mardi gras.
Majozi said the recentSouth Coast storms had prompted residents and the municipality to pull together and clean the beaches. Accommodation was still available but filling fast.
