Zimbabwe poll 'betrayal'

The ANC Youth League and the Independent Democrats have called on the world not to recognise the government of Robert Mugabe.

ANCYL president Julius Malema, closing the organisation's 23rd congress in Nasrec yesterday morning, said to recognise the Zimbabwe election results "would be a betrayal of not only our own values, but also the aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe".

"We must decry the subversion of the rule of law and tyranny disguised as a genuine struggle against recolonisation of Zimbabwe," Malema said.

"The outcome of the so-called presidential run-off elections must be set aside and both Zanu-PF and Movement for Democratic Change, along with organs of civil society, must find each other in order to find a lasting solution to Zimbabwe's political and economic challenges."

ID leader Patricia de Lille has called for Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to be appointed as president and Robert Mugabe as prime minister in a transitional government that should precede fresh elections.
