Wheelchair tennis enthusiasts are in for a treat when participants from across the continent take part in a yearly tournament billed for Polokwane tennis courts from today until Saturday.
The tournament is staged under the aegis of the International Tennis Federation in conjunction with Wheelchair Tennis South Africa.
It will feature players from Nigeria, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Once again, the South Africans are expected to take full advantage of their home turf and do well in the tournament in which they impressed last season.
The competition was held at the same venue last year.
The South Africans beat Morocco in the junior category and went on to wallop Mauritius in the women's category only to succumb to the powerful Nigerians in the men's category last year.
"We are satisfied with the facilities at Polokwane tennis courts and the same should be said about accommodation and other logistics.
"We are confident that this tourney will be a roaring success like it was last season," Selaelo Selepe, WTSA's development officer, said yesterday.
Players to watch include Kgothatso Montjane, the country's No 1 woman wheelchair tennis player, Sydwell Mathonsi and Desmond Monyamane.
Montjane, who is based in Limpopo, represented the country in Italy and was also in the team that qualified for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
