The South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) announced this week that the country has been selected to host the 2008 IRSF-Fisac World Rope Skipping Championships, which will be held at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town.
The event will take place on July 23 to 28.
This is the first time the championships, held biennially around the world, will be in Africa.
Hosted by the SAGF under the umbrella of the International Rope Skipping Federation (IRSF-Fisac), the championships are divided into two sections, the Fisac World Championships (masters) and the City of Cape Town International (open).
A record 19 countries will be participating: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Thaipei-China, the UK and USA.
The South African team of 62 rope skippers was chosen during a rigorous selection process at a training camp in Bloemfontein in March.
"This is an opportunity to show the world how quickly rope skipping in South Africa has developed as a professional sport," says Jerry Masai, president of the SAGF.
