The nightmare of travelling a long distance for shopping will be a thing of the past for the people of Maake and other areas east of Tzaneen when the new mall at Rita village is completed.
The construction of the R90million Limpopo project started in December last year and will be completed by September.
The new mall will open its doors for shoppers early in October.
The spokesman for the developers, Jason McCormick, says the 1000 square metre mall will house no less than 46 major commercial stores and banking institutions.
He says the mall is being built on a piece of land donated by local chiefs through the Bakgaga Development Trust.
"It will be managed by a private company until the year 2030, when its ownership will be transferred back to the community in the area," McCcormick says.
Community spokesman Judas Rakgwale says the project has brought relief to people in the Maake, Muhlava, NkowaNkowa and Sekororo areas.
At present about 479 local people are temporarily employed, easing poverty in their households.
But Rakgwale says the number of people working on the construction site will be reduced by 200 from this week because the major construction works has been completed.
He says the mall will continue to help fight poverty because many people from and around Maake will get long- and short-term employment.
Meanwhile, Greater Tzaneen Municipality mayor Othaniel Mushwana says the new mall will boost the economy of the Tzaneen area.
