Why worry only now?

It is interesting that Parliament's sports portfolio committee has now raised concerns about the dwindling support at matches involving Bafana Bafana.

It is interesting that Parliament's sports portfolio committee has now raised concerns about the dwindling support at matches involving Bafana Bafana.

The main question people are now asking is: Why has Butana Komphela and his committee started to be concerned about the turnout at Bafana Bafana's matches?

The support for our national squad has never been impressive and we have all been concerned about the situation.

We thought then that the government was equally concerned about the situation but it now appears that was not the case. That is until now.

Why did Komphela and his committee wait so long to address this situation?

And why only Bafana Bafana?

Is this because we are the hosts of the 2010 Fifa World Cup and or the Confederations Cup?

The government should have been seen to be playing an aggressive role in mobilising support for our national teams.

Komphela and his committee should be reminded that they are not doing the country any favours by drumming up support for the national teams.

It should be their priority to ensure the support of all national teams.

It is a fact that our government officials don't attend our matches as much as the country and its people would expect them to.

But it is disturbing that they are raising their concerns in the comfort of their posh offices than on the public front.

They should be seen around the stadiums making these pleas to local residents to attend matches than speak from their offices.

What we are saying today is that: "We want to see them attending all the matches of our national teams at the stadiums and nothing else."

We just hope their initiative will benefit all our national teams rather than Bafana Bafana only.

They should also make a similar plea to support other national teams such as softball and basketball.

These national squads, and other national teams, deserve to be embraced and supported by our government.

Their public relations officers should also be called by the same Parliament for support.

After all, there surely is life after the 2010 World Cup.
