Maritzburg United made a quick return to the Absa Premiership after beating FC AK 2-0 in an exciting national play-off game at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

United achieved this feat after Fadlu Davids scored a brace to give them a 3-1 aggregate score. Davids scored his first goal midway through the second half. He completed his brace via a penalty in the 72nd minute.

It was one of the greatest moments for the home side who played to a 1-all draw against Bahumi at Eldorado Park Stadium in Johannesburg in the first leg last week.

The game itself was exciting, with Bahumi dominating the proceedings from the opening whistle. United's success yesterday guaranteed them a return to the rich Premiership next season.

The Durbanites are coached by former FC AK mentor Ian Palmer.

They return to top flight football after they were relegated at the end of the 2006/2007 season. They succeeded the same way their neighbours, AmaZulu, did when they negotiated their way back to the Premiership through play-offs last season.

Bahumi, who were involved in a protracted corruption and bribery case, were confident going into yesterday's match despite the fact that they allowed United to score a goal in their first leg tie last Wednesday.

While United secured their return to the elite league, Bahumi will have another chance to fight their way into the elite league.

They meet Dynamos in the first leg of the two-leg play-offs at Eldorado Park Stadium on Wednesday. kick off is at 3pm.

n Meanwhile in the semifinals of the Mpumalanga Premier's Cup Kaizer Chiefs beat Mbabane Highlanders 2-0 and Desportivo Maputo beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 11-10 on penalties.

Chiefs won the Premier's Cup when they beat Desportivo 2-0 in the final later in the day.
