Taxi bosses have blasted as a joke Minister of Labour Membathisi Mdladlana's minimum wage for the taxi industry scheduled to become effective tomorrow.
The department said on Friday that taxi drivers and administration staff would receive a minimum wage of R1740 a month if they worked 48 hours a week.
Rank marshals would earn R1392, while other workers would get up to R1218.
Gauteng taxi organisations warned that Mdladlana's minimum wage, being implemented as part of the Taxi Sectoral Determination under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, would cause friction between taxi owners and taxi drivers.
Under the Taxi Sectoral Determination, employers are obliged to register taxi drivers, administrative staff, rank or queue marshals, fare collectors and cleaners with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).
Dorljota, Armstra and Faraday taxi associations said there was no research done on how the taxi industry operates and how much employees were earning.
They said this would cause confusion during implementation process.
"It is really a joke what the Labour Department is proposing to be the minimum wage because drivers and queue marshals are earning way more than that," said Dorljota spokesman Peter Mabe.
