Top South African runner Hendrick Ramaala is ready to roll at the Nedbank South African Half-Marathon Championships in Port Elizabeth on July 5.

The event, which is expected to attract runners from as far as Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe, will be run at Motherwell township.

Ramaala is in the star-studded Central Gauteng Athletics provincial team that is expected to sweep the boards during the event.

"I have been training hard in preparation for the Beijing Olympics. Everything has been going according to plan," Ramaala said yesterday.

"The weather has been perfect here in Johannesburg during the day, which is good for my training for the Olympics.

"Competition will be stiff because there is a lot of money involved but I'm hoping for a decent time in Motherwell."

The first senior man and woman to cross the finish line will be smiling all the way to the bank with a cheque for R25000.

Subsequent to the Motherwell half-marathon, Ramaala will be off to the United States to take part in the world-class New York Half-Marathon on July 27.

"The New York Half-Marathon is a great platform for the runners preparing for the Olympics to assess their readiness," said Ramaala.
