The intellectual bankruptcy of political bigwigs about extending Jackie Selebi's employment contract is a cause for deep concern.

The intellectual bankruptcy of political bigwigs about extending Jackie Selebi's employment contract is a cause for deep concern.

The issue is sub judice, and no court or internal disciplinary hearing has found him guilty. President Thabo Mbeki is a state employer and can't breach labour laws and fire people without legal justification. He is liable to litigation by fired employees, like any company chief executive.

The sad part is that if he is sued for unfair dismissal, we taxpayers have to pay the millions, as happened with Billy Masetlha.

Either those who want Selebi fired on sentiment have no respect for taxpayers' money or they are grossly out of their depth.
