Five robbers ran out of luck yesterday when they were arrested after stealing meat worth R65 from a butchery in Witpoortjie on the West Rand.

The gang was arrested after a shootout with police. One of the men was wounded and taken to hospital, where he is under police guard. No officers were injured.

West Rand police spokesman S'phiwe Ndlovu said: "Five men aged between 24 and 34, armed with two unlicensed handguns, held up employees at a butchery and demanded money.

"They also repeatedly assaulted one of the employees and stole meat worth R65."

Ndlovu said the employees gave police a description of the robbers' vehicle, which was spotted nearby.

"When police tried to stop them the robbers ignored it and a chase ensued. At a field between Snake Park and Bramfischerville in Soweto they started shooting at the police."

Ndlovu said one of the men was at present out on bail a murder charge.

The police recovered two handguns, five women's rings, money and meat.

The men will appear in the Krugersdorp magistrate's court soon.
