Storm brewing in light heavyweights

Fight publicist Terry Pettifer says his boss at Golden Gloves, Rodney Berman, hopes that Jared "The Storm" Lovett could be South Africa's first world light heavyweight champion.

In a statement yesterday, Pettifer quoted Berman saying: "With the devilish good looks of a matinee idol, and the punching power and personal charisma to go with it, Jared could be South Africa's answer to a world light heavyweight champion

"The only weight division in boxing in which no South African has ever managed to win a world championship thus far is the light heavyweight division.

"Indeed, it's quite a stunning fact given this land's sterling achievements in other weight divisions."

But it is still too early to think big of this 22-year-old boxer who is under the guidance of Colin Nathan, after three wins in as many fights since he turned professional last year. Pettifer shared this belief.

"That the handsome Lovett could succeed where so many other local light heavyweights have failed to bring home world honours, is as yet uncertain, and methinks Berman will market his powerful hitting young prospect with desirable caution." he said.
