Various sporting programmes are set to benefit from more than R16 million allocated by the Mpumalanga department of culture, sports and recreation.
During her budget speech on Wednesday, MEC Dina Pule said they have put aside R1,2 million to assist the Mpumalanga Academy of Sport in the development of sport and talent identification programmes in the province.
She said for the Siyadlala mass participation programme (SMMP), including the World Cup legacy projects, an amount of R14,65 million will be spent.
Pule said through the (SMPP) they will continue implementing programmes in the 18 municipalities with 200 volunteers employed temporarily at a stipend of R1 200 a month to deliver the programme.
The volunteers will be taught code-specific events management as well as sport leadership to be able to deliver the programme.
"Fifty-two schools are now participating in the school sport mass participation programme in the new financial year. All these schools will be provided with playing attire and sport equipment. Nine of these 52 schools are Learners with Special Educational Needs schools," said Pule.
