Two senior officials of the Limpopo department of roads and transport have been fired after being found guilty of violating the Public Finance Management Act.

Phuti Mabelebele, senior manager for communications, was suspended on February 14 2007 and Walter Sathekge, general manager for traffic management, was suspended on March 14 2007. Both officials had been suspended with full pay.

Mabelebele was found guilty of flouting the Act (PFMA) by buying promotional items not destined for anywhere.

The items, which included T-shirts, caps, pens, bicycles and jackets were found in her office a few months after they were bought.

It was alleged that she had bought the materials for her personal use.

Sathekge allegedly contracted a service provider to instal cameras worth over R2 million without following procedures.

Department spokesman Boiki Tsedu said yesterday that everyone in the department welcomed the outcome of the disciplinary action.

"Although as a department we regret the duration of the suspension, which was not in our hands, we are relieved that it has now reached finality," said Tsedu.

He said they were now awaiting the actual sanction against the two officials.

"We are content with the conclusion and hope that the sanction will bring the matter to finality."
