Soccer star Cyril Nzama celebrates his 34th birthday today, a day after making a brief appearance in court for domestic violence.

"Skhokho", as he is popularly known to fans, is facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

On June 17 an argument broke out between Nzama and his wife Nonhlanhla, 31, at their Naturena home in Johannesburg.

Nzama allegedly assaulted his wife by kicking, choking and pushing her towards a television stand.

Nzama is out on warning after he turned himself in to the Mondeor police.

Johannesburg magistrate Heleen Engelbrecht postponed the Kaizer Chiefs and former Bafana Bafana defender's case to August 5 for plea and trial.

Nonhlanhla refused to comment.

He told Sowetan: "I cannot discuss my private life with the media."
