Trigger-happy policemen are on the rampage, "firing on innocent people", alleges the community of Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

Sithembile Bodoza, 24, was shot dead and three others wounded last month, while other shootings took place earlier this year.

Family spokesman Vivian Sibi said Bodoza was with his friend, Lindi Ngwane, who was driving his uncle's taxi.

"Police ordered Ngwane to stop the vehicle and when he failed to do so they gave chase and fired shots. Bodoza was killed," Sibi said.

Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) spokesman Dikeledi Phiri said: "We are of the view that police should have asked for backup to help them apprehend the suspects without using excessive force."
