Last week Chrysler launched the new Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV).

The on- and off-road capabilities of both are amazing.

That's why the 340km drive from Johannesburg to Alpine Heath in northern KwaZulu-Natal, was easy.

The comfort of the Grand Cherokee is in a class of its own, but it shares a strong resemblance to its stablemate, the Dodge Nitro.

Inside, both the Cherokee and the Grand have not changed much.

But the all-new Jeep Cherokee remains true to its 4x4 heritage while offering more on-road refinement and amenities.

It takes on Jeep's rugged exterior design, and now comes standard with the all-new Selec-Trac II full-time four-wheel-drive system.

"Jeep Cherokee has a proud 10-year history in South Africa having pioneered the mid-sized SUV segment," said Chrysler South Africa's brand manager Guy Franken.

"Over that time it has remained one of the top-selling SUVs with its blend of true Jeep heritage, balanced on- and off-road performance and fashionable appearance."

Standard on both the Jeep Cherokee Sport and Limited is the signature seven-slot grille.

A front-end module that spans across the vehicle houses the grille and headlamp system in a single unit.

The Sky Slider roof is made of a reinforced acrylic cloth, similar to a convertible top, which is weather-resistant and leak-proof.

The Jeep Cherokee brings the open-air experience with the industry-exclusive Sky Slider full-length open canvas roof, which can be moved to several positions with a convenient express, one-touch switch.

The 3,7-litre V6 petrol engine provides the Cherokee with peak power and torque while providing smooth and quiet operation.

The Cherokee is equipped with safety and comfort features such as advanced multi-stage air bags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with rough-road detection and all-speed Traction Control.

The Grand Cherokee now also features a new 3.7l V6 engine that delivers an improvement in fuel economy over its V8 siblings.

Prices:

lCherokee Sport 3,7-litre - R299900;

lCherokee Ltd 2,8 CRD - R359900;

lJeep Grand Cherokee 3,7-litre V6 Laredo Automatic - R369900 and the
