Noni Jabavu, one of the Eastern Cape's most celebrated authors and a member of the South African Literary Awards' (Sala) family, will be buried in East London on Friday.
Jabavu, 88, died in her sleep last Wednesday.
Jabavu, pictured, was given the Sala Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and a year earlier received the Eastern Cape Premier's Arts and Culture Award.
Sala is a nation-building partnership project of the Department of Arts and Culture, Sowetan, the SABC, Nutrend Publishers and wRite Associates.
Jabavu, the author of seminal autobiographical, sociological and travel books, Drawn in Colour and The Ochre People, left South Africa in 1933 to further her studies in England.
Her writings were nostalgic, evoked rich memories of her childhood and made poignant observations and related commentaries on the sadistic apartheid system.
In 1939 Jabavu married English film director Michael Crossfield. She became the first black female editor of The New Strand magazine in 1962. She also worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation.
