The league championship's historic R10 million first prize, won by SuperSport United last season, is the envy of the so-called big guns of South African soccer, and they are adding to their arsenal to get it.

Mamelodi Sundowns are leading the pack in this regard, with Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs also acquiring high-profile players.

The Brazilians are expected to finalise the acquisition of former Bafana Bafana player Thando Mngomeni from Santos this week. Tyren Arendse will be heading in the opposite direction.

Arendse has been on the wanted list of Goolam Allie, Santos chairman, for some time and will be back in Cape Town this week.

Also joining Santos is Bongi Macala from Jomo Cosmos.

Mngomeni is one of four prominent players who have been signed by Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe in the past four days.

The others are former Bafana Bafana captain Sibusiso Zuma, who will earn R200 000 a month, Katlego Mphela, Siboniso Gaxa and Koketso Mmotong.

The Brazilians have also signed youngster Kurt Lentjies from Vasco da Gama and Namibian international Sydney Plaatjies from Cosmos.

The Plaatjies deal was finalised by Motsepe and Cosmos boss Jomo Sono yesterday.

The two new recruits were with the team at their pre-season camp in Mpumalanga yesterday.

Still with Cosmos, Lucky Mhlathe is moving to neighbours SuperSport United after he was seen training with the club yesterday.

Mhlathe is a suitable replacement for Gaxa.

At the same time, Brent Carelse and Godfrey Sapula have left Downs to join SuperSport United and Platinum Stars, respectively.

While the process of signing almost every player is on at Chloorkop, they are also expected to offload players like David Kannemeyer, Peter Ndlovu and Elias Ngoepe.

Kannemeyer looks set to rejoin Ajax Cape Town.

The Brazilians and Matsatsantsa a Pitori will unveil their new recruits during the Mopani Soccer Challenge in NkowaNkowa on July 5.

For Pirates and Chiefs, their new players will be seen in action during the inaugural Phakisa Cup in Sasolburg on July 5.

Some of the new players at Pirates include Moeneeb Josephs and Thulasizwe Mbuyane.

For Chiefs, they include Reneilwe Letsholanyane, Valery Nahayo, Thabang Rooi and Gordon "Yster" Gilbert.
