Gauteng teams failed to live up to their provincial slogan, "Home of Champions", after Limpopo athletes dominated the yearly Fiat Soweto School Games in Meadowlands at the weekend.

Marumofase High School from Limpopo competed with seven schools from Soweto.

The Limpopo team showed the spirit of true champions when they claimed the booty in basketball (boys and girls) and soccer and grabbed second spot in volleyball to Meadowlands.

In addition, Marumofase were crowned champions in soccer after beating favourites Kelokitso High School in a closely contested encounter.

Makgome Secondary won the netball section.

The disciplined Marumofase garnered the overall best and most disciplined school of the tournament awards. Their classic performance also earned them the Alessandro Cevess trophy.

Giorgio Gorelli, managing director of Fiat Group Automobile in South Africa, said that trophy was in memory of the former Italian ambassador in South Africa who died in a car accident early this year.
