The ANC must act decisively to quell this continuing hooliganism that has characterised its elective conferences.
This misbehaviour is not new though. It started long before the Polokwane conference and no action was ever taken to bring those hooligans to book. The stabbing of Skwatsha should be understood in the context of a new behaviour that our movement has tolerated for a while now.
At the reburial of Moses Mabhida at Harry Gwala Stadium, Thabo Mbeki was embarrassed and humiliated. Some of us raised our concerns about that incident. Immediately after testifying to the commission probing the incident, we were expelled.
We were castigated and humiliated. We were accused of insulting Jacob Zuma. Today we are vindicated: this new unruly behaviour is impacting negatively on the ANC. Even before that incident, Mbeki was a victim of insults and derogatory songs by people who claim to be ANC members and supporters of Zuma. At Utrecht, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka had her speech disrupted. Again no one was disciplined.
Premier S'bu Ndebele had youths throwing plastic bottles with urine at him. At Cosatu marches during the public servants' strike, derogatory songs and insults were aimed at Mbeki and Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi. At the SACP congress in Port Elizabeth, songs insinuating that Mbeki might know about the assassination of Chris Hani were sung and no one stood up to instruct the delegates to stop.
These ANC hooligans must be brought to book.
Members and the leadership of the movement must also cut down on the war rhetoric. Inciting violent behaviour is irresponsible, reckless and highly irrational.
