The provision of fair and equal access to justice for all is part of the Justice Department's vision.

The provision of fair and equal access to justice for all is part of the Justice Department's vision.

The department has also vowed - in its mission statement - to increase the speed at which cases in the courts are managed and concluded.

These noble ideals however seem to be just a pipe dream at Kroonstad Medium B Prison in the Free State.

Sixteen suspects have embarked on a hunger strike because of the delay in their cases. Some of them have been awaiting trial for four years.

This is unacceptable.

The department must rectify this anomalous situation and implement processes that are fast and effective.

Failure to do so denies them the justice they have been made to wait for so long.
