Investigation into Vusi Pikoli resumes

The inquiry into National Director of Public Prosecutions boss Vusi Pikoli's fitness to hold office will resume in Johannesburg today.

The inquiry into National Director of Public Prosecutions boss Vusi Pikoli's fitness to hold office will resume in Johannesburg today.

At the first round of the hearings last month, inquiry chairman Frene Ginwala heard submissions from Deputy Justice Minister Johnny de Lange, Presidency director-general Frank Chikane and Justice Department director-general Menzi Simelane on aspects of the NPA's functioning.

Mbeki suspended Pikoli as head of the NPA on September 24 last year citing a breakdown in the relationship between Pikoli and Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla.

A letter from Mbeki to Pikoli, released at the first round of hearings, said Pikoli did not appreciate the threat to national security that organised crime syndicates posed.

But Pikoli's legal representatives have said that the real reason for his suspension was the NDPP's investigation into Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

The hearings will continue until July 4 and will run from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Last week Business Day reported that Pikoli had been offered a job at Mvelaphanda Holdings, headed by ANC executive committee member Tokyo Sexwale. - Sapa
