Mining magnate and businessman Patrice Motsepe gave former president Nelson Mandela an early birthday present of R3million yesterday.

Motsepe, chairman of the Sanlam Ubuntu-Botho empowerment partnership and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, handed over the donation to Mandela at Mandela House in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Mandela turns 90 next month and the birthday celebration will be in London.

The donation was made to the Nelson Mandela Endowment Fund to ensure the continuation of the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF).

NMF chief executive Achmat Dangor said: "We welcome this partnership and we are sure that it will lead to a long-term relationship that will help ensure the sustainability of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

"The donation will go towards developing a world-class Centre of Memory and Dialogue at the foundation that will honour, not only the life and work of Nelson Mandela, but embrace all those who helped in the transition of South Africa."

Motsepe said Mandela "represents an inspiration to all of us. It is a great privilege for us that we can today contribute this R3million and as I said to Achmat, we are going to give much, much more".

Sanlam's chief executive Johan van Zyl said: "Through this partnership we strive to live and expand the values of transformation and empowerment, imprinted by Mr Mandela, to the business world."
