The mayor of Tzaneen municipality in Limpopo, Othaniel Mushwana, pictured, has promised to intensify the town's programme of waste reduction in a bid to claim first position as the cleanest town in the country.
He said the municipality would now focus its waste programme on both the town's rural and urban areas.
Mushwana was speaking after Tzaneen became runner-up for the 2007-08 National Cleanest Town Competition, which was held in Boksburg on Friday.
First position went to Swartland local municipality in Western Cape. Tzaneen got first position in the provincial competition last year.
Speaking to Sowetan, Mushwana said the competition was won by ensuring that all people in a town lived in a healthy environment.
"We assure our people that we will work very hard to claim the first position next year," Mushwana promised.
The head of the waste management unit in the Tzaneen municipality, Henk Mienie, said he and his unit had declared war on waste.
Mienie said his unit would continue to make sure that Tzaneen's people, both in the town's rural and urban areas, lived in a clean environment.
